CONCRETE CANCER REPAIRS
What is concrete cancer?
Concrete cancer occurs when the internal reinforcement steel rusts causing the surrounding concrete to break and detach.
This happens as a result of outside elements such as: carbon, chlorides, water etc. penetrating the pores of the concrete. The rusting steel expands and over time the pressure it creates is so high it causes the surrounding concrete to break apart. Once this reaction begins it exponentially increases in speed and concrete deterioration increases.
How do you repair concrete cancer?
Unfortunately by the time the contractor is called the concrete cancer has usually caused significant damage. In mild cases we use jack hammers to fully expose the affected reo steel and we then either remove the rust from the steel (where the steel still possesses 90% or more of its structure) or we replace the steel in its entirety.
Our rust removal techniques are at the forefront of industry standard. Most of the time we can remove ALL of the rust. We then repair the concrete with specialist repair mortars.
In more severe cases where the top and bottom layer of reo steel has been destroyed we must replace the concrete slab in its entirety. This means brand new steel and high MPA replacement concrete.
Our repair techniques:
Our techniques to repair concrete cancer include the following:
-
use of electrolysis
-
use of sand blasting
-
weld in new steel
-
use of sacrificial anodes
-
building form work
-
concreting and use of specialist primers and repair mortars.
